Side Scan Sonar

The Bluebird Project used side scan sonar as a mapping tool
for the wreck site. As the name implies the sonar looks out to the
side of the survey vessel and can see several hundred metres if
necessary. Imagine the above image as a black and white aerial
photograph taken after someone had drained the lake.
The image above is a close up shot of the main part of
the Bluebird wreck with the tail fin clearly visable at the top left of
the picture. The whole fuselage is visable including the rear spar which
can be seen sticking out either side of the of the shattered hull.
