Independant Observers Novie and Paul are two more team members who earned their place on the team by dogged persistence in the face of adversity. They turned up on the beach one cold Saturday morning, trying to appear incospicuous in their anoraks. They might as well have brought a banner and flashing lights! We demanded to know whether they were press only to find to our consternation that they were in fact "Speed Record Club Members" and were in fact potentially more dangerous than the press. Having discovered that they had travelled vast distances to freeze their bits off on the beach, and having seen them do it week in, week out, we took pity on them and adopted them as our independent observers when it came time to start recovering bits of wreckage. It's doubtful that we would have coped if it hadn't been for their help on the night when Beanie got hurt and without their CD ROM like knowledge of all things Campbell, we would have been stumped for answers on more than one occasion. Rather disturbingly, it has been suggested that our two independent observers are having to put up with some ill feeling from within the speed record club of which they are dedicated members. Although we as a team completely fail to understand why this should be in the first place, we must point out that they are part of this team purely on their own merit and their involvement is not in any way connected to the speed record club. Their peers should be delighted for them as they have earned their place on the project that is not only close to their hearts but effectively altered the course of history and they did it by demonstrating that a little bit of extra determination and dedication that separates certain individuals from the common herd. These are the very qualities that the speed record club admire in others and rightly so. Bill Smith |
