Re: Donald Campbell Photos

I think that period, and knowing how Jetstar came about, it's more likely that Donald was there to dicuss the Fireball, and having seen the pictures on the link, there's a hull there that looks very much like a Fireball.

Re: So, what did Bluebird sound like?

Ok, I'm name dropping! Alain de Cadenet got the job of driving the replica in Across the Lake, because he owned one of Sir Malcolm's cameras (!!). Ken Norris and I worked with Jack Lovell on the replica, and during this came into contact with Anthony Hopkins. The man is a genius! Last in the bar at ...

Re: Bluebird K7, the "New" tail fin & Balance point query

Lead ingots, mounted in the stern to compensate for the more forward mounted Orpheus (e.g to re-instate the balance). Tailfin pulling the the bow up, does that ignore the fin (and rudder) designed to drive the bow down? Just a thought.

Re: So, what did Bluebird sound like?

There's two versions of Price Of a Record. The original to my mind is the better one. The latter is the same with some additions by Melvyn Bragg and i/vs with Gina. Very atmospheric record of 66/67. Then there's Challenge of The Lake, nice colour record of the Lake Mead attempt, though typically Ame...

Re: Pic of the Day

I chopped out the colour Canadian footage of the crash for us all to have a look at recently, and what struck us all at the time was how from this angle you can see a lot more of how the boat hit the water- a lot more over on her left side than the more familiar B&W crash clip would lead you to bel...

Re: Pic of the Day

I think the following section of video is illuminating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ftZfB-VNQ (derived from 'Across the Lake'). As BB passes the face of the camera tramping very severely (timer marker: 6.00mins >) there are then 3-4 pitching cycles when the boat is completely clear of the wate...

Re: The Bluebird Years

Tony and Ken's graphs are of the final run. Bill Maloney did the graphs of the aero/hydro dynamic qauilties.

As for wotking from cine film, news or otherwise, I never found a copy that hadn't been so edited that it made sense!

Re: Across the lake

The replica was built by Jack Lovell, the same guy who built some of the most recent Batmobiles. I sat in in once, while waiting for Alain De Cadenet (who was driving it) and it was quite spooky, looking down the lake through the canopy and wondering what 300 would be like. The "jet" in the back is ...
