I read on another forum that the canopy was not made of strong enough perspex and this is why it blew off. Was that true or did you ever discover what happened to cause the accident? Sadly I have no idea as I was mostly concerned with how to internally blast an inch diameter pipe for the first five or six inches of its length so the swageing tool could be re-used without collecting an uneven layer of soot and thus applying uneven pressure around the pipe's inner circumference. ...

The early Metropolitan Railway locomotives were fitted with valves which enabled the footplate crew to switch from condensing to non-condensing mode and I would imagine that the opportunity to revive the fire by doing this was welcomed by the crews.
