Re: Vulcan XH558
Much as I love the sight and sound of a Vulcan in flight, I think I would be pretty peeved if I had stumped up my hard-earned cash thinking that I had helped to "Save the Vulcan", only to find out a few months later all I had done was to "Save the Vulcan for another year". Nah, m...

Re: joke of the day
A ten year old Australian boy is walking down the street when a car pulls up next to him. "Do you want to get into my car?" enquires the driver; "Get lost!" replies the lad. "I'll give you a sweet if you get in my car" -"I said get lost!" "I'll give you a...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
If you're operating so close to the margins you need to know the exact thrust at any given speed, you're not using a big enough engine. Just to recap what we were actually discussing: You stated that you can determine the horsepower of a jet engined vehicle by multiplying the maximum rated static t...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
The thing you're unaware of is ram effect. If the vehicle intake is big enough in the first place for a jet engine to spin up to 100% rpm standing still, it's going to develop even more thrust once the vehicle is moving fast enough for ram effect to start putting even more air through the intake. I...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
With jet engines operating at or near sea level, it is close enough to simply state that. I think you'll find that it isn't. For a start, operating altitude is only one of several variables which may affect a jet engine's ability to produce thrust. Secondly, a jet engine's rated static thrust will ...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
No, with a jet or rocket all you need to know is the thrust and the speed. Exactly. However, with a jet engine you can not assume that the thrust at all speeds is the same as the engine's rated static thrust; you need some other means to determine the actual thrust being developed at that speed bef...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
No, I meant more horsepower. They had engines that produced more thrust. More thrust at a given speed means more horsepower. True in itself but an over-simplification if I may say so. They may have been fitted with engines having a greater maximum static thrust rating but it can't be assumed that a...

Do you mean they developed more static thrust than Bluebird, or have you made the appropriate calculations based on force, time and distance?Ratliff wrote:Hustler and Discovery II were the only World Water Speed Record boats with more horsepower than Bluebird.

Re: joke of the day
Liverpool FC is having a hard time of it these days. On the statue of John Lennon at Liverpool Airport is the timeless inscription "above us, only sky". Recently added graffiti reads "...and beneath us, only Wolves and West Ham" That is unfair and inaccurate. I cannot let this p...
