Re: January 2017- Displaying K7

The more I consider things it the more I think that you shouldn't use the event as just a commemoration and publicity. Maximise the other things the project can get out of it. For example, the chance for a Dress Rehearsal of moving K7 to Consiton or of using the extra space of the venue to ease a jo...

Re: January 2017- Displaying K7

On stealing the thunder of the final reveal, why not display her partially dissembled - as long as this doesn't interfere with restoration to much? Pitch it as a 'last chance to see' inside her as the next time she will appear outside the workshop will be when she is closed up for her runs and displ...

Re: Technical Talk

I am told by a friend that it is a standard Apprentice Piece on both the Lathe and the Vertical Milling Machine.

How 'standard' it is outside the world of apprenticeships intended to prepare one for machining components for atomic weapons I don't know.

Re: End of an Era

I was going to say something snarky and amusing... but then an IDEA came to me. Could you stave off, at least temporarily, withdrawal symptoms by using any suitable spare metal you have around to make up some demonstration pieces? You could show the stages of stretching and shrinking metal, how you ...

Re: The Vulcan XH558 & General Aviation Thread

I think a reality check is in order. These days nobody (except, perhaps, Russia and China - but even then I'm sceptical regarding things like electronics) can do an entirely 'in country' warplane project like it used to be possible to do. Even with those countries that appear to do so aren't when yo...

Re: The Vulcan XH558 & General Aviation Thread

The TSR2 debacle is one of those complex issues that is never satisfactorily resolved. The aircraft had room for bombs (nukes, if needed) The nuclear requirement actually drove much of the design - basically the aircraft was sized around them. There was a lot of politics, but a lot of people forget...

Re: Off the Rails - Train Stuff

Yet Britain had the world first commercial MagLev train - the shuttle between Birmingham International railway station and Birmingham Airport. It was based on research at BR Derby. It opened in 1984 and closed in 1995 - mainly due to obsolescence in electrical parts making it hard to find spares whi...

Re: Pic of the Day

Hmm - thought provoking. In order to work smarter it's necessary to work in the first place but does the sheer amount of effort and ingenuity that goes into being bone bloody idle count as work? Going to keep me awake, is this one. These equations might help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work...

The real thing being lowered in a test rig

Lots of shots of riveting and tin bashing in the rest of the video.
