Mike may correct me, but from memory the drivers knuckles should be quite close to the cockpit sides whilst clasping the wheel.

No, you're spot on Rich. There's very little room each side of the wheel as you grip it, and there are little thin knuckle guards made from foam and vinyl screwed in place to help.
