Recent Spamming Of Forum

Post by Mike Bull » Thu Sep 03, 2009 9:26 pm

As some of you have noticed, just lately the forum has been the victim of spammers. There's three of us with access to moderate/administer the forum, and we do our best to keep on top of things but obviously we also have lives (or at least, a boat to build!) and some stuff does slip through. Our apologies for anything that gets missed for a while and which may cause offence.

Aaarrrggghhh - they're back again.

Just a suggestion but it might be worth not only deleting the posts and the user accounts but also put one of those annoying 'type the letters you see in the box' thingys when registering to keep out the spam-bots.

Alternatively you could always try and redirect them to the HLF, I'm sure they'd appreciate a hard time (pun intended).

The code thing when you register, or having all new memberships approved by a mod, is on my mind but it's Al we need for that and he's away on his jollies right now.

From what I've seen here behind the scenes and read elsewhere, it's likely that most of the spammers are automated ones, bots made to crawl the web and jump aboard undefended little forums such as ours automatically. We've had a few spams pop up, but the number of new users with dodgy-seeming usernames is huge (compared to our normal rate of new users).

I know many people ARE bothered by such posts as the one i read on here recently (totally off subject and absolutely adult in it's content), but i understand that it is a hazzard of any website or forum on the internet today, therefore, i just ignore such posts and move straight onto the interesting stuff. in all the time i have been reading in on the forum, i have only encountered ONE such post !

Kudos to the admin team on keeping on top of it.

As an aside, spamming is, unfortunately, one of the hazzards of running a forum. whilst there are ways to "limit" this, there is not a 100% succesful method, short of an admin "approving" each new membership request to vet "possible" dodgy memberships. It's either that, or enforce a "new posts approved by admin" option as standard policy, but that takes away from the interactivity of the forum. There are however methods to limit it. As i run a phpbb forum myself, i can vouch for this fact personally.
Just cos my username is Thunderer, doesn't necessarily mean I SHOUT !!

Thanks to Al we now have a system in place that should prevent the spam appearing- thanks for bearing with us.

I've been deleting all the bogus users- of which there were sadly over a thousand- but if anyone genuine has been deleted accidentally, please accept my apologies, and of course, please join up again.
