Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
Some history regarding Split Second.
This car was built by Primetime Land Speed Engineering for speed record work in the late nineties. Standing start MSA National British records were set in June 1999 over 1/4 mile and half kilo. In July 2006 inspite of very fast one way speeds the car could not complete the second pass on flying start records at Fairford. Fastest flying start 1/4 mile (one way remember) was 329.11 mph. This event was an MSA National Britsh outright speed record attempt. Peak speed was in excess of 331.592 mph. Split Second is the fastest jet car to be timed in the UK.
New owner (2007/8) Julian Webb has been learning about and handling the car on demonstrations at drag racing events. He entered the UK Timing Association (UKTA) autumn records event at Elvington, near York last weekend. He was guided by previous owner and outright British National speed record holder, Colin Fallows.
Julian made standing start 1/4 mile runs on the Saturday and then flying start runs on the Sunday. He soon learnt that record setting/breaking is not easy. There are videos on social media showing some of the runs he made.
[Attending with Julian was drag racer Lee Gallimore who has started a project known as the 'Black Country Bullit' which will see a British built twin engined jet car challenge the UK record speeds (Elvington or Pendine) and give Lee a possibility of running very fast at Bonneville].

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
Hi Bill/Malcolm all good information there Malcolm however you seem to have overlooked who made up the Primetime team and perhaps Bill will recognize the names more than the records attained.. Mark Newby was the driver of Split Second and Colin Fallows drove Vampire.Vampire being the car Hamster went on to destroy and nearly killed himself in the process. With only himself to blame. Can't name all the support team but I do remember fondly our times assisting Colin and Mark at Elvington bird strikes and all. Oh yes Donald Campbells Bluebird K7 wasn't the only projectile to be hit by a bird approaching 300 m.p.h : ) I also remember very well Mark holding the car on the brakes winding Split Seconds engine up. The runway was vibrating under my feet and being asked to hold something I must have been a little to close as he shot away as it suddenly got very hot and loud
Anyway Bill if you recall we did and exchange with Colin and Mark involving and ejector seat that Paul and I collected or delivered to/at Bruntingthorpe during shakedown runs of Split Second in the early days of the project. Malcolm also in attendance. I think you then exchanged the seat for and engine possibly but can't quite recall how that one went. I may have the relevant facts but not necessarily in the right order

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
I read the accident report. It said that a piece of wire from a big rotary brush used to clean the runway had penetrated the tyre horizontally between the carcass and the tread causing it to de-laminate. The short pieces of brush-bristle don't affect an aircraft tyre but the thin, high-speed tyre on the car was compromised.
I also heard that Mr Hammond was being something of a know-it-all that day and was not taking proper heed of his instructions and that this may have had a bearing on the outcome but that was just heresay and I'm happy to be called out on that one...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
I had forgotten that it was the 9th anniversary of the RH event on Sunday. Might though explain why I was so edgy and critical of anyone suggesting that when running the jet car the driver took a long time to get ready.
The HSE did not change their draft report, which all parties involved were allowed to see.
I presume the edited footage of the TG event is somewhere on line for those who wish to see it.
All I would add is that run 6 does give some understanding of how alert drivers of fast open wheelled vehicles have to be at all times.
MBP - as myself; not as a member of the BBP

Novie. I've got a copy of the team photo for the Primetime Vampire 300mph . I also have a copy of the paperwork.
Somewhere I also have a recording of the crispy fried crow incident. A crow took off from the runway but was too slow to get out of the way and got sucked into the air intake via a quick 'smack' to Colins helmet. The air intake was covered by a 'chicken wire' arrangement which broke the bird up before taking it through the engine sending out 'crispy fried crow'.
If you want copies give me a shout and I will dig them out and get them to you.
Re Hammond, If you watch the recording from his cockpit you will see his tyre start to fall apart [ about 190mph from memory] and he keeps accelerating until the blow out and the consequent swerve and roll.

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
The picture I have with Novie kneeling and tucked in behind Mark at the front of the car, whilst the rest of the SRC crew stood behind the car with the timekeepers and officials, is from the first MSA British National record at Elvington. (I do not look so young now!) By July 2000 we had all aged some more!
Other pictures can be seen in the book "The British are Coming".
The Vampire at Fairford looks like a trussed chicken as the bodywork did not take to the speed of the first pass on the 301.67 mph average speed British National record in July '06.

Got a problem with computer at mo it would seem. But you should not go believing everything you read as black and white. I would sooner hear it from credible people there on the day. Basically he was not following instructions just overdosing on his own excitement and totally overlooked what was happening before him. Colin had the same happen previously I am lead to believe and he brought the car to a safe stop from a much higher speed. Malcolm?

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
All opinions are welcomed on this site, but some of the facts were never accepted by the HSE.
Calling a friend (who had driven 3000 runs in a jet car) as being 'sour' is just being rude Mike.
Colin and Mark knew what to teach this driver and relayed what should be done in this teaching day to that driver. The views of the team principal were only made public after the driver was well in to recovery and after publications had run the TG story.
I remind you Mike to get a look at run six, filmed from the roll cage just inches above the sight line of the driver. If that run outcome footage had not been kept 'secret' by the programme from the driver and the operating team on the day, then the additional run seven would not have gone ahead. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Reactions? Look at the TG programme where the same driver tried to test a Benetton (actually carried out before the jet event) and see the test team manger tell the same driver/person how slow his two feet driving was - going from power off to the brake.
And do not forget that one of the golden rules with a jet car is ----------------- never use the brakes during a run!
(These comments are personal and do not reflect those of the BBP)
