Re: What did you do at the weekend?

Post by Graham Milne »

Not so much what I DID but more like what I'm GOING to do this weekend. Tomorrow morning I fly off on holiday to the Balearic Islands, and then when I get home after 10 days in the sun I've got a few nights booked at the Black Bull for some Coniston time before going back to work on the 20th of Sep.

I'll be arriving in Coniston on the 14th, on the very night that my beloved Glasgow Rangers take on the mighty Man Utd at Old Trafford, so I'll be watching that in the Crown as from what I remember the Black Bull nor the Yewdale has a television. If anyone here is in Coniston on the 14th, 15th, 16th or 17th and feels like a few beers with my good self then be sure to let me know.

Last time staying in the Black Bull I was wakened at a very early hour by the sound of over 100 screaming MK1 and Mk2 Ford Escorts roaring through the village, great sight.
Looks like one of those new 'Japanese' sportscars..............

The weekend before last was an endurance record attempt - of the land variety. Will be on TV next month. You may see me in the background. Fifth Gear is the programme to watch out for.

This last weekend it was Brighton Speed Trials in the damp weather. This was then followed on the Sunday with a Bluebird Supporters Club visit to Filching Manor. A chance to see some recovered parts from K7 after the accident, some parts that were not on K7 in 1967 and other memorabilia from the Campbells, including Gina's Agfa Bluebird boat and the Across the Lake 'buck'.

The work on K3 is progressing well and when she floats out and then runs it will not be with the R engine (although that was on display).

Malcolm,

What's the plan with K3? I heard she was going to get her bottom wet again. Fabulous news for old machinery in general. Rumour has it that our tribute act may be rolled out this year too. Things are hotting up!

Is there anything on the web regarding K3 as it would be an interesting read?
It will also be interesting to see how this tribute act has turned out.

Well, you know how you go and see a pub tribute band hoping to see, say, a magnificent tribute to Sweden's finest pop export but what you really get is two blokes with stick on beards and two fat lasses in lycra..?
Now now, Mr Bull... You've not seen it - I have. Must say it's a bit of a let-down though. The workmanship isn't great and it's going to be waaay too heavy but never mind. They'd give it far more dignity by painting it a different colour, giving it its own name and identity and letting it create a reputation all its own. As it stands it's neither fish nor fowl - poor thing.

The K3 is going to get wet - we were not told where, but a location has been arranged and the Filching people will run her. Perhaps someone will see a silver and blue boat on the road?

Once that trial is done the craft will be 'unveiled' as an operating craft and then put through its paces for all to see and admire. Probably will go overseas for some of the demonstrations too. [Although I have not heard a 'live' R engine, my only thought is that the sound will be wrong for the purists].

If the tribute act appears it should have a realistic sound - just do not know how they are gaining permission to use any British lake, if she can go over 10 mph.

A reliable source of mine said K3 was bound for Lake Maggiore. The project was casting about for a documentary maker to come and watch. Could have just been a bit of hamming it up to try and close a deal but that's what was said.

Far as I can ascertain-Loch Ness has no speed limit on the main Loch-rest of Scottish Lochs seem to be 90 kph on main body :geek:

I am sure you are right Novie!

I now have this vision of K3 and K7 running together on the same lake at some future point - now wouldn't THAT be a great sight and one in the eye for the HLF too!! :P
