I must be missing something here - why is everyone trying to send Johnny-5 to Mars all of a sudden?

A very good question

1 in 10 people understands binary. The other one doesn't

I'm not sure if everyone is trying to send people to Mars. Many believe that unmanned craft are the way to go in future space exploration, by not risking human life, whilst achieving things at a fraction of the cost by ditching the life-support capability and not having to man-rate everything.

My own view is that there's a role for both, but I'm not a particular fan of the manned-mission-to-Mars campaign. As I see it, the vast cost is simply not worth the risk or rewards. Not this century anyway.

Bloody hell - whatever next!

I'd seen that thing somewhere before, but had no idea it was called Johnny-5.

Anyway, I was a Beagle 2 fan. And watching Colin Pillinger from a distance (I never met him), I couldn't help but admire his indefatigable spirit. Mad, brilliant - British! That ticked all the boxes for me.

The way he managed to persuade a sceptical world to believe in his dream and back it was a master-class in determination and commitment.

Shame we don't have more like him.

I'm notorious in the workshop for never watching telly to the point that if they want to talk about me when I'm there they do it in film references but even I know who Johnny-5 is!

Is it having kids that keeps an oldie in touch with these things? (I don't, and don't regret it - yet.)

Short Circuit was 1986 - I was 19 years old! Didn't have my first procreation event until I was 38.

I'd never heard of Short Circuit before today.

As I have been suspecting for some time, I'm just not getting out enough!

If you've not been out since 1986 you may as well stay in now...
