Dunno how many people visit the guest book .... but it seems the providers have pulled the plug
Lets hope a replacement is found quickly.
Guest Book.
Re: Guest Book.
So have all those comments gone for good or did you keep a backup of it?

Not sure how good a resource it was - possibly potential contacts for fundraising that may not have been contactable apart from the Guest Book pages - but it seemed to me that a considerable number of "guests" would have been encouraged to at least read the Diary or join the Forum. Mind you, clearly many of those signing the Guest Book had read very little indeed!Piston Broke wrote:gone

Re: Guest Book.
That's a real shame, especially after a lot of folks took the time and energy to contribute towards it and showed their support for the project way before the forum started
Re: Guest Book.
It's not surprising. I run several sites and 2 or 3 still had guestbooks in place but had seen perhaps one or two signatories in the last year - the concept has just died a death now that many sites have forums or allow comments on individual pages (often via Facebook or other social media). The htmlgear/guestgear mob's systems had been as reliable as a politician for about the last 3 years too. Love how they claim they "announced" they'd be shutting down - but didn't bother emailing their customers with said announcement!

Re: Guest Book.
Sorry about the one word reply before
I have tried to recover the guest book but have been unable to get them back, the guest book had no backup facility.
If anyone has electronic copies email them to me and I'll put them back on the site.
I am looking into a replacement or something else but for now I'll be taking the buttons down

Modified original post, didn't think of someone having paper copiesMike Bull wrote:I suspect you'll regret saying that if someone suddenly sends you several hundred sheets of paper to copy out!Piston Broke wrote:If anyone has taken copies send them to me and ill put them back on the site.
I think Damien has got it right- times have changed anyway.
I do agree with you and Damien. Guestbooks were cutting edge when we first put them up on the site, now with forums, facebook and twitter etc I do think they are old tech that have been passed by other methods

Re: Guest Book.
...were there any other URL's which pointed to the guestbook than the current one on the home page? The internet wayback machine (http://archive.org/web/web.php) has many archives of the main page, but it got a redirect error on the guestbook.

Re: Guest Book.
I personally think it is a bloody crime that they have shut it down without forewarning big Al of the closure. A lot of people have taken the time and effort to make positive entries and pay the project many compliments ( and a few negatives obviously) over the years and I think i am right in saying Bill and the project have made some useful contacts through the guest book over the years. Even if it is old technology who cares, new is not always best and can't stand this bulls--t Farce book and Twotter lot which usually ends in tears anyway when somebody is given a right verbal bashing and all their dirty linen is aired in public for all to see even if its just for an evening or so before it is taken down. I have been asked many times to join farce book by Family members mainly but have resisted thus far. The company want prosecuting for shutting it down without warning! Bunch of Bas---ds !
However I have every confidence in Al to coming up with something and possibly retrieving some if not all from some source or another. Al I bet Fred Blois has it all down loaded and backed up for one person that comes to mind. I never gave it a thought that this might happen.
