Post by lsrdatabase »

Hi all,
I was asked this on my Rainbow Forum, I was wondering what the BBP Forum have to say.

<We all know the story, but what evidence (if any) is their to confirm the fact that Donald Campbell played THE ACE OF SPADES the night of January 3rd 1967 ?>

Awww, they're all laughing at you, Fred. Welcome to my world...

I was once introduced to an old-timer who was allegedly involved in the same card game but it was at the funeral so my civic duty as box-carrier got in the way of questioning said individual. Seems to have a grain of truth but then if you played cards for an hour or two you'd doubtless meet all the cards sooner or later anyway.

The story was that DC was playing patience, so who ever was "involved " in the game sounds a touch dodgy!

Leo told me Donald told him it had happened, but that he himself didn't see it. He also told me he told Donald, "well if you did, you'd better not run, that's if you believe that @#*$@!"

I think the most authoritative evidence is that of Arthur Knowles in The Bluebird Years (P.136). He says the story was confirmed to him by David Benson and Keith Harrison (very reliable witnesses).

In a form of Russian Patience, DMC turned-up the Ace of Spades followed by the Queen of Spades, the significance being that Mary Queen of Scots had dealt such the night before she was beheaded. The significance on someone deeply superstitious and in the context of that particular evening, can only be imagined.

Believe it or not BUT Donald Campbell was a member of a club called "The Ace Of Spades".
