I'd love to see something similar to the Race of Champions added. Or maybe something off the wall like winch challenge/trialling. Use a standard design of vehicle to keep it a test of skill, anyone complaining that it doesn't involve physical exertion can be handed a pair of rigging gloves and installed as winch monkey for the day!

I have mostly been working on refurbishing a couple of HO scale railway locos. A 1970s Marklin electric loco which was shedding paint everywhere (brake fluid works wonders for stripping paint without melting plastic, then just respray using undercoat unlike the original) and now a 1950s Marklin steam loco which was showing every one of its years. The former will be complete when the parts arrive from various German ebay sellers, the latter may take a bit longer as it isn't so easy to find spares.

Probably around the same time you see sprinters at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Swimmers competing at Coniston Records Week and discus throwers at the Reno Air Races

Three noble events that celebrate what mankind is capable of, exactly as it ought to be.
Perhaps the Olympic lot ought to add clubbing females over the head with a noggin of wood then dragging them into the cave to mate to their repertoire of things to do. It would be suitably cave-man-esque and very entertaining too.

I'm not big on the running/jumping/spear throwing festival either- I went to tremendous lengths to avoid any and all such activity while in school, let alone now watching it on TV as an adult!

That little Jess Ennis is rather lovely though, it must be said.

Good idea, and very easy to organise: all they would have to do is go down to Bigg market on a Saturday night with a handful of medals...

Wouldn't be in the true spirit of the sport because you don't need a club down there (The Bigg market is a notorious drinking hole in Newcastle). It's all rather simpler than that. You just say, 'drink up, you're pulled' and away you go.

Joking aside, the sheer focus and determination of those athletes is mind boggling and what it must feel like to bring home a gold medal after years of hard work can only be imagined.

Now how does a young man end up devoting his very being to jumping into a sand pit? Someone needs to show him the Bigg market!

Fantastic is the word I would use having been glued to the Olympic haul of medals by Team G.B. Screaming at the telly watching Victoria Pendleton. Mo Farah doing the business along with all the other cyclists, rowers, sailors runners etc etc. Mind you tonight with Usain Bolt although Jamaican what a man what a runner! He was slow out of the blocks but came storming through the field to win win win and set a new Olympic record. Murray gets gold in the Tennis singles and silver in the mixed doubles. The last 48hrs has been glorious makes you proud to be British :D

re the swimmers at Coniston records week, whilst I can't say I know of any, I can confirm that a British Karate champion took part when it was at Windermere as well as several champion swimmers with a quadruple International [ 4 different sports!] helping out in one team.

Going to be up to! - A few days in the lakes with the future Mrs S, relaxing, and perhaps taking in a few of Donalds watering holes. And maybe a first visit to the Ruskin..
Good luck to the BBP team, makes me proud to be British (and a North-easterner to boot!). Damn fine work, chaps!
