We've not had the scattered welding rods for a while. Despite there being a dozen open packs of rods on the shelf it was invariably the ones we were using that were all over the floor in the morning. They sit on a bracket that holds an extraction fan but not once have the rods come off while we've been there or when the fan was running. We always found them next day when the fan had been off all night.
Then we once found the bottle key from the welding gas about three feet from the bottle when we came in next morning. There's just no way that fell out of the bottle and flew three feet and there's no chance anyone went anywhere near it after we locked up so that one remains a real puzzle.
And you may have noticed some items of retired clothing hanging on the wall. John's Benetton sweatshirt, Girl's ripped jeans, etc. Well the boots I nicked from Scrapheap were retired some months ago too onto the RSJ about ten feet off the ground and have been there ever since until Saturday gone when one of them, for no obvious reason, jumped off the ledge while we were standing having our brew.
from time to time we also get an inexplicable puddle of water in the middle of the floor too. There's no water pipes near it on the floor above and the ceiling is bone dry anyway. It's not coming up from below because the floor has many layers of that blue, epoxy paint on it so it's just one more thing we can't explain.

I thought it was just me, A couple of weeks ago i was in there on my own, I knew exactly where i had left my riveting gear from the night before, when i arrived i could not find the snap for my rivet gun, or the bag of rivets i was using. I searched the workshop, eventualy i got a different snap from the drawer and a bag of the same rivets from the trolley, when i returned to my station there was my snap and bag of rivets exactly where i had left them the night before. Not the first time things like this has happened either, I got a few cold chills when stripping the seat pan down. Was on me own then as it happens.

There's definitely some weird goings on in the workshop but it's the bottle key that really bugs me. There's just no way on this earth that the thing could have got loose and to where it ended up by accident, it just couldn't! And that makes me wonder about the other things. As Richie said, that boot didn't just fall, it jumped off the RSJ in front of at least three witnesses yet what do we do? We just tell Donald to pack it in then we clear up his mess.

My mate has his workshop on the site of a hanger on an old WWII RAF airfield (26 OTU - RAF Wing). What's more, it was the hanger where all of the sick and injured PoWs were cared for on their return during Operation Exodus. It's also the site of an accident in which a Wellington collided with the hanger, caught fire and killed a number of personel.
A group of mediums visited a couple of years ago and went away saying that there are definitely a couple of "restless spirits" lingering around. This caused a degree of sniggering from the mechanic who told me and all I could say was "Hmmm... You've never worked through the night up here on your own, have you. It tends to liven up a bit around 3am.." My mate's eldest daughter won't even go there after dark.
The bottle key on the welder in the engineeringshop seems to be a favourite there too - I've gone in and found it in the middle of the floor atleast 3-4 times. The toilet door in the main workshop has swung fully open and then closed again... You hear great crashes that sound as though someone has dropped a box of spanners from above their head but never find anything when you go to investigate... Things fly randomly off shelves... I think one of them doesn't care too much for some of my music as the cd player gets switched off sometimes when I wander off to make a brew.
The most common thing though is probably things vanishing and then reappearing after you've torn the place apart - I was building an engine a little while ago and one of the gudgeon pin circlips vanished. I spent an hour looking EVERYWHERE for it with no joy before I gave up and eventually found a spare. When my mate went in to open up in the morning, there it was on the worktop infront of the kettle - 200ft away from where I was working! He thought I must've left it there but I cleared the cups away and wiped the top down last thing before I set the alarm and walked out the door.

Hmm, not sure I buy this "restless spirits" bit, although to paraphrase the bard, I am entirely prepared to believe that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in our philosophy.
That said, if you really want to confirm whether it is Donald's spirit that is causing the disturbances in the BBP workshop, just leave a female member of the team to work in there alone and see if she gets her bottom pinched! ;)

I don't think that would be a safe experiment as from what I've heard of Donald it wouldn't stop with a spot of bottom pinching!

The "restless spirits" bit was just a direct quote of what they said. After everything I've seen and experienced (the goings on in my friend's workshop are nothing compared to my own house and the one next door) I still don't know what words I would use to describe it. I do know that, despite being as open-minded as I was, if someone had described to me ten years ago what I've experienced since, I would have probably considered them insane.

It's one of those things you can keep an open mind to but never actually believe until you've experienced it first-hand. Oh, and don't believe anything you see from the charlatans on tv! ;)
