Lakeland Motor Museum/'Across The Lake' Mock Up

Lakeland Motor Museum

Postby Digitaljunior » Sun Jun 17, 2012 11:08 am

We visited the Lakeland Motor Museum yesterday and I was curious if anyone could add any further information to a couple of questions?

They have on display an old 1936 Bentley in Bluebird Blue and also a Land Rover in Blue which were labelled as owned by Donald. Not come across these before but interesting that the Land Rover was owned by DMC during 1967 and only transferred to a new owner in August of 1967.

The other question I have to ask is a couple of pieces of K7 which are in display cases – what’s the history as to why these aren’t included in the rebuild? If this is sensitive please feel free to delete or ignore.

Is the wreckage still labeled as 'found washed up on the shores of Windermere'?

Its a shame they spoil a potentially good display with inaccuracies. I had a lively debate with them around 2005 during a visit to the display when still at Holker Hall. The story boards still claimed that Donald Campbell had never been found, despite the fact he had been given a fitting funeral some years before. When I pointed this out to them, their response was not positive and I was left with the feeling that they were happy enough to collect entry fees but not especially concerned about correctly honouring Donald Campbell's memory. Unsurprisingly they didn't agree with my point of view! I may be wrong, but I believe the error was only corrected on the move to the new location some years later.

I think Bill said it may be part of the spar closing plate or spar root fairing.

We're pretty sure that's the front end of the right-hand cockpit wall with the closing plate for the old spar box still attached. It's what it looks like and we can't account for that piece and there's not much else it could be but until I get face to face with it I can't be 100%

We offered them another piece that we couldn't use (and which could be easily identified), access to our photo archive and pretty much anything else they wanted in exchange for that piece so we could put it back but, you know how it goes, bureaucracy rules...

It's not too late, mind you, because we've not riveted that panel down yet. And the offer stands if anyone wants to ask them nicely, but I'll not hold my breath.

This is not put on as a public entertainment... it's put on to reach a certain goal.

It's definitely a piece of spar box and the associated closing plate- from other photos of it, the distinctive pattern of rivets on the spar box is obvious, to say nothing of the rounded edge of the closing plate and associated 2BA screws.

If it's any help, here's a shot of it from the other side

I seem to remember being involved in a fair of bit of discussion about this on the SRG site. After referencing a couple of cutaways and looking at the nature of the damage, I came to the conclusion that it has been mounted upside down and is possibly the underside & rear edge of the starboard front spar fairing. That said, while a lot of people thought that quite plausable, I've never got my hands dirty on the old girl (not for lack of desire to) and don't know exactly what's been acounted for so I'll leave all further speculation to those who do.

PS
Please excuse the iffy quality of the pic - it was late in the day on my way back from the funeral, the lighting was terrible and I forgot my flash.

It's Sunday and I'm bored, so I cleaned it up a little.
