Lakeland Motor Museum/'Across The Lake' Mock Up

As I said above, it's a piece of the right hand side spar box, which is the structure behind the exterior skin that encloses the original aperture for the front spar, where it once passed through the frame. The exterior closing plate for this aperture is also there in part, and the bits of material visible behind some of the screw heads are from where the front spar fairing overlapped the closing plate- the fabric was used as a water seal.

Now you mention it, I was wondering about the fabric in the previous pic (I couldn't get round to see that side on my visit). With that in mind I just looked at it again and the witness mark from the overlap is suddenly as clear as day!

None of this changes the irrefutable fact, however, that it should have been returned to the boat a long time ago and not left to languish in a glass box. You really would think it a 'no-brainer'...

Yes, definitely spar box, outer skin and spar-box closing plate.

Now why won't they return it?

While there's probably a degree of truth there, it's worth remembering that the Lakeland and other museums are known to follow this forum so perhaps a degree of humility wouldn't hurt.

I'll just say, it's a shame.

I would agree except that there really was no excuse for not returning that piece especially as we were offering far more in return.

I personally think it a shameful and entirely inexcusable act and that they have forfeited any right to complain about any mud thrown their way as a result. I, for one, will not be frequenting their establishment again and this is the sole reason why.

The trouble with these outfits is that they do everything by committee. I always imagine it as though they stand in a huddle with one ankle tied to the person next to them. Progress is slow and cumbersome if any is made at all and it only takes one to refuse to move and that 's the job stopped.

Coming from a background of trouble-shooting for the automotive industry where quick decisions and decisive action is the only way, you can imagine how well I fit into that world!

Then there's aerospace, where I've only had the privilege of paddling in the shallows, but it's a very careful and cautious world, very deliberate yet ruthlessly efficient proving that doing things by committee and getting things done is perfectly possible.

So the museologists have no excuse...

wonder if who ever donated the "Find" to the museum put a stipulation on that it could not be sold or swapped ? just seems crazy that its there as a tribute, yet the vehicle it is from is actually being faithfully restored for same reasons making the bit they have...well.........

From a business point of view surely they could see the excellent PR they would gain by "presenting" it back to K7 whilst advertising the museum in the process... nevermind
