The Barracuda Project

The Barracuda Project

Postby Renegadenemo » Fri Aug 13, 2010 6:17 pm

I'm off to Bristol early next month to do the first survey of our squashed Barracuda.

"You don't have to straighten everything, you know," they told me.

Looks like the project is a goer.

Excellent- suits me! My sole condition to working on the next BBP would be that I'm allowed to train and take a turn to sit in the cockpit and start it, though. 8-)

I'm not starting the horrid thing but I do insist on building the engine. Not done a Merlin before...

Even I understand a Merlin!

You'll have to be nice to the type if the FAAM are to allow us to rebuild one!

Been doing a bit of research on the things-they seem to enjoy scuba diving as a hobby-over 30 splashed around the coastline-probably all broken by now with corrosion but good for templates-Think the bashed remains are all Mark 2 anyway-
Mike-starting the things might be a bit problematic on an airfield-need a ticket!( and that's Fixed wing Bill!)-Taxiing the bugger needs at least a permit to taxi or a valid licence-dunno if a PPL covers a Baccaruda-there aint any of the type in private hands!-In fact there aint any of the type!,but knowing the BBP there must be a good few licensed pilots around who would do the honours. 8-)

Who says the thing would be on an airfield when I started it? ;)

Anyhow, such silliness is a long way away...assuming the project actually happens though, it would be a big change from the current one; hopefully less politics, a different kind of anorak, considerably less public interest, maybe a few nice old guys that once flew them to meet, and hopefully, none of the Type 3 idiots that we all dread. But if we can preserve the core of the team and the associated camaraderie that we have now, I'd happily help to build anything!

I know K3 had a Meteor, but in reality it was a Merlin, just with the supercharger replaced with a starter, and I used to quite enjoy starting that on a regular basis!

If this happens-can I suggest a kinda list of "getme's" and" gofors"-as in airframe, engine & props, ancilliaries, undercarriage etc-would alleviate doubling up on folks searching for the same item?-just a thought :geek:
