I bet that lake has all sorts of crap at the bottom of it. I remember once when I was up there on business I counted three sheep that fell off the hills straight into the water in the space of 45 minutes...

Strangely, there's not much of anything down there. When we were involved in the 'Lady of the Lake' murder trial the defence suggested that the entire lakebed must be littered with personal effects similar to those recovered from around the body so we were sent to survey and video random tracts of lake but all we turned up was the occasional bottle or tin or sweet wrapper. We later tested a long range, hi-res sidescan in there and pretty much cleaned out the whole lake. Apart from a canoe and a few odds and ends there's nothing down there. It's just a rolling plain of brown mud.

Really?!

I remember seeing something about the lady of the lake on the internet, can't remember the details though.

I seem to remember some confusion over whether it was Donald or not, although I seem to remember a few bodies being pulled out over the years.

Out of interest, what is the border on the right hand side of the scan image? Is it the surface or edge of lake maybe?

Forgive my naievity...

One question for you Bill... I read once that the original sponsons were taken back after the crash to Ken Norris's factory, and were subsequently buried beneath the workshop floor, never to be seen again.

I take it there was no way of being able to salvage these?

The border on the right is the innermost extent of the scan below the towfish. There's a gap between the left and right channels of the sidescan (you're looking at the left hand channel) to prevent crosstalk under the fish that would confuse the image.
The sponsons were taken back to Norris Bros after the crash then subsequently scrapped with the rest of the gnat.

It turned into a tragedy for all concerned.

Hi everyone, kinda new here, lurked around for a while doing a lot of reading of the diary and the forum and what more can I say than total respect to the bluebird project team!! The whole story from the original record attempts through to the recovery and restoration of such a peice of history really does want to make you proud of some of the achievments of Great Britain, and to see her run on Coniston again will be one of those moments in life to always remember, I cannot even begin to understand the frustrations that will have been encountered on a project of this nature, at this moment in time, all I can do is say a big thank you to you all for making this happen and never giving up on the dream, so many people could learn so much from you.... truly inspiring.

Whilst on holiday in the lakes this year, a long walk around the Coniston fells gave a long time to refelct on it all in somewhat magnificent surroundings, almost magical.... Could have done with one of the projects tin bashers though, got hit by another car on the way out of Coniston that afternoon lol....
