found this link on youtube....interesting regarding setting rivets ! there are a few of them from this person on different aspects but this covers most of the salient points of doing the job :D

long time lurker

Hello, I'm a long time lurker and have long admired what your all doing on the project. The picture today of the back cover with the green new parts has got me interested because I'm trying to save a side car that was hand built by my grandfather during the war. It was made of pretty thin aluminium sheet and rivets over a steel frame and it has fizzed away where the steel was after years against a wet garage wall. Because its a unique family item I do not have the heart to chop out any of the bad parts so maybe you can explain more about the doublers you make? Thanks

Hi Tyler, and welcome...

We'd be happy to help you mend your granddad's side car. What exactly do you want to know?

Wow, thanks for the reply mr Smith!

Am I right in saying that your doublers are put behind the damaged area with rivets around the corroson holes into the remaining good metal? How do you then fill the rot holes? and it doesn't matter for what I want to repair but will all that green alter the weight and balance of the boat?

No, of course it won't, it's utterly negligible and accounted for in the engineering as well as increasing strength enormously... I think your side car will work just fine.

You make a patch out of new aluminium and file it until it fits the hole perfectly then rivet it in. What is the commercially available version of Choccy Sauce? Bill? :-)

I'm not sure there is one. We get the stuff from Airbus and it sticks like you'd never believe. Rob and I found a little, half inch square spreader left inside the left-hand flute today. But could we get it loose? What a job! and that was without any rivets.

I might have known that you would have already thought about the extra weight,

For my small project do I need to add something like your chocolate sauce between the layers to?

A few Type IIIs have tried to criticise us for adding weight to the boat but in truth something like the box of doublers for the whole engine cover weighs very little, and I should think that the doublers for the whole upper works of the boat combined weigh less than just one of the slabs of lead at the back. In terms of overall weight and balance etc, we've got considerable margin to add metal and still keep her right.

Oh for goodness sake! When you look at some of the real engineering issues we've had to solve, and then to be asked this one. I've had a bad day so here it is in brief.

Total weight added to the engine cover - 8kg, which is quite a bit less than the redundant Beryl engine mounts that will be dismounted for running purposes because we don't need them.

Total weight added to the tail cover - 6kg. We can leave out half a ton of lead to get over that one but we won't because a little extra aft trim will do no harm.

Total weight added to the air intakes - zero and we can save there with a smaller fuel load and all of this with a considerable increase in strength because we have all that remained plus that of the new material, which adds up to more than she started with especially when you factor in the modern day sealants and rivets.

Other savings include a lighter steering box, lighter batteries and the removal of several redundant items that would otherwise only be along for the ride. All of which will be duly returned for display purposes.

In conclusion, K7 will actually be running lighter than she was back in 67 - unless Ted starts eating burgers...
