It's always been the plan to conserve the fin and the flags as much as possible with the original paint intact. We can get away with it in this instance because the fin is dismountable and if it starts to fizz we can unbolt it at any time and sling it in the stripping bath should the need arise. But how cool would it be to send the old girl across the lake triumphantly flying the same flags as last time?

The tail is looking rather splendid stood there on the stand girl and I put together. I had real fun getting both of those blanking plates off especially what was the Rudder side as Bill wanted the paint damaging as little as possible when revealing the rivet heads. And on that Saturday Mr. Bull kept appearing every five minutes taking lots of photo's of the Gnat tail as she revealed more of his beloved Gnat orange it reminded me of a time when Paul and I would look like this every time we helped salvage a piece of K7 from the dark depths of Coniston as it broke the surface attached to the end of the rope.
We are a bit more relaxed about it nowadays.

And this is probably why i am not getting this leave the original paint on and risk the corrosion taking hold of the tail cowling etc save the flags by all means but strip it and sort the corrosion as we have done on the rest of K7.

It scared the crap out of me when I came to look at what Mike was getting all goosebumpy about and found Donald staring back at me out of his cockpit!

There's a time we'd not have dared used that pic as it would've set all the moaners bleating on about respect, dignity and all that stuff but nowadays there's a real sense of celebrating Donald's life and achievements and a picture like that brings it all to life a little. I hope he appreciates it!

I think the appropriety of it is beyond question and is rather fitting when taken in the context of the visual aspect of the build now, more than ever, giving the appearance of everything coming back to life.

It still gave me the creeping sh*ts for a second though!

I agree entirely and it's our Michael Bullfrog's work. Excellent and, I suspect, destined to become one of the iconic images from the rebuild.

One of those widgety things that picks up the inboard end of the spray baffle strut. It looks like nothing but putting the pair of them together in the correct way with just the right rivets took a whole afternoon and a joint effort between Rob and Mike because the original rivet holes needed a great deal of care when being used again. Will you be impressed when you see it in the museum? I doubt it.

It's true, I thought we would have to dunk the things back in the stripping bath and weld the original holes up, but Rob was my hero that afternoon as he came up with a brilliant rivet-within-a-rivet repair scheme and got both brackets put together for me, while I fussed on that the heads and tails were on the right sides so they matched the reference photos! So that was probably a couple of hours work, and then yesterday I spent a similar couple of hours actually riveting the things to the outer skins. Then people wonder why the boat is taking so long!

The bracket pictured has a little green replacement piece- the one on the other side is entirely original.

I get quite attached to these little original bits and pieces!

Looking good Mr. Smith looks like K7 is going to be doing some Hellraising once again looking at that pic of the day.
