Bluebird Models

There's a new Bluebird model coming available soon...

Down at BBP HQ we've been cooking something up. Doddy has been quietly bashing away at a few pieces of scrap tin and from it has emerged a sculpture of K7. Doddy, for those who don't know, worked on the real boat in 1958 - ish. The sculpture is about eighteen inches long and very detailed but that's not where it ends. You see, everyone on the project has done a bit on it. From the welding to the fettling or cutting of pieces we've all had a hand in it. And it gets better - the tail fin is held on with rivets we took out of K7 and re-used and when the dragon's teeth under the bow go on they'll be made of genuine LOOF. There's still some touches to add to it and once it's done we'll auction it off to pay for the small fortune's worth of rivets Mike is asking for to finish the intakes. A truly unique item oozing with provenance.

I went to the Brighton 'Modelworld' a week or so back, and this is the first chance I've had to post these.

Regards to all, Fred

Hi Bill re-Mr. Dodds working on Bluebird in 58-ish only three years away mate. Mr. Dodds actually worked on Bluebird K7 on the shores of Ullswater in 1955 and was responsible for carrying out some of the major alterations to K7 that would eventually see her plain successfully and ultimately regain the World water Speed Record for Great Britain and Donald Campbell's first world record of 202.32 M.P.H Mr. Dodds is a skilled craftsman in the art of tin bashing in the extreme but also he is multi-skilled in other types of metal artwork and was honoured to have worked on some rather special house's large gates. However the name of that house and its ges eludes me at this point in time but it was mighty fine work Mr.Dodds did on that project. The special boat Mr. Dodds is making is remarkable as a Bill says it is "A truly unique item oozing with provenance" having seen and transported it to and from the workshop I can say first hand although it is not finished it looks fantastic :D

One of my favourite sayings is that only fools and children mock an unfinished job. But even work in progres on this is amazing. I know we touched on works of art before, but whoever ends up with this piece will truly have a work of art to be proud of.

Maybe, but even on an unfinished job you can see attention to detail and skilled workmanship. That's an incredible sculpture and a better model than a lot of the production kits!

With reference to the other model, I think the trick to Lego is to go big. You can hide the inevitable squareness better if you make the model larger - witness their giant Lego man sculptures where the fact that they've made a head from bricks doesn't really show too much, your eye fills in the gaps.

Talking of which, Lego might be another company to interest in rights to sell a K7 model. They've been offering a few big sculptures for collectors of late (Tower Bridge and a VW camper to name two) and I could see a decent K7 selling well.

The Lego K7 first appears back on Page 15 of this same thread, in some images I found once while Googling.

I can supply K7 Plans, as drawn-up for Ken Norris by Richard Corrigan. Ken gave me permission to scan them and reproduce them on CD.

Cost in the U.K. is £5.50 plus £1 P&P, and can be posted off by return mail.

Kindest regards, Fred

Hi Fred,
I am Richard Corrigan's son. We are not in touch much anymore but I would love to have the plans for K7. I have a vivid memory of him at the drawing board when I was young and he was working for ITT Creed in Brighton. Thanks in advance Mike

Family holiday out of way I can now concentrate on starting the Touchwood kit.

First off I need to draw up some plans for the cockpit which is a slide in section on this kit.

In the mean time here are a couple of shots of the nose and cockpit fibre glass moulding.

Still need cleaning up and the cockpit opening cutting out.

Difficult to be sure from the photos, but I'd say the moulding is a little sharp sided- there's more of a rad as the sides turn into the top decks beside the cockpit/into the nose. There's a further row of screws across the top of the nose too, further forward in two groups of (from memory) four. Don't forget the closing plates for the old front spar aperture, the track for the canopy roller, and the diagonal rows of screws and rivets that run across the cockpit sides!

Wish you hadn't started yet?! ;)
