I thought that the closing gig was a bit of a mish-mash...I found it very telling that two of the most effective spots of the night, which gained the biggest spontaneous reaction from the crowd, both involved musicians that have been dead for years- i.e, Lennon and Mercury. Just how alive did dear Freddie seem on that screen? For a brief moment, for me anyway, he was THERE; terriffic stuff. I thought the 'Imagine' sequence with the children from the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir and Liverpool Signing Choir was very moving- especially as John's face was built up towards the end, and then separated again as it were a flock of birds.

Not sure why we had some young fella singing 'Wish You Were Here' backed by a token member of Pink Floyd, and a member of Genesis?!
The less said about the likes of that Jessie creature and the Spice Girls etc, the better.
The Olympics surprised me- I really thought it would be a big exercise in massively over-budget farce and cynicism, but the whole thing was a triumph to be proud of. But what with the Jubilee and the Olympics now over, I hope a jolly spirit persists and the country doesn't descend back into the glums again.
As for the boat, had circumstances allowed it to be finished for this year then I'm sure we could have ridden an extra wave of Cool Britannia, though I do now feel that we'd have gotten lost in there somewhere and that when her time does eventually come, she's quite capable of making her own news thank you very much!
