sheppane comments on the 'wing' on the hull just behind the cockpit.
This wasn't a water deflector, it was a water catcher. It was explained to ****** that there is a correlation between speed and wave length, this person put a 'wing' where it was calculated the first wave would be, and so using the wave to lift the boat nose.
For some reason I still do not know, even though it was pointed out by Ron Wolbold and me, nothing was done to the boat at the front end[where the spray was coming from]. Ron even offered to put spray rails on at his own expence. I believe he was ignored and the members of the original starting team were sidelined[my opinion]
I attach a photo of the spray pattern of BP, you work out where something should have been done, I bet we all say the same!
Another reason she did not lift on to plane was that she shipped gallons of water every run from the side panels. These side panels were put on to accomadate 'water brakes'. Why the heck water brakes would be needed in the middle of the hull even I can't explain that, other to say it was nothing to do with Tony, Ron Wolbold, Raj Nangia or me! we all said it was wrong[my memory]

Whatever the merits of the 'design', 'redesign', layout, controls, safety cell, or whatever .... a man took the completed K8 to a British lake, fired the engine and was prepared to travel across the surface of the water at speed.

There are many instances of 'ideas', 'paper projects', and dreams in Record Breaking and not so many attempts.

I had hoped this forum - on a site based around the proposition of putting a 55 year old design of boat working and back on the water - would focus on the what is happening or has happened with a more positive tone of posting.

I wish I had been at the lake shore when Fahey was there - nice pictures Neil.

Steve, any resemblance between 'Thunderchild' and BP IS purely coincidental..other than both of them are of canard design or reverse 2 pointer or for those that don't know what we are talking about one planing point at the front and 2 at the rear.
TC was designed from model tests, if you remember her look at the the design of Quicksilver when she was a reverse design..similarities?? I had sent all my test data to Ken Norris..I think he may have borrowed some! [ I hope so]
He did recommend my engine to Nigel though even though they weren't suitable in the end[ Adours]. On that point QS even used Lorne Campbell[ hi Lorne if you look in] who I asked to design TC back in the days.....memories...

While it does look something of a daft little craft, and I'm not always sure about the tone of some of the postings on this subject, I do agree with our own Sir Malcolm there.

But I still don't accept the absurd inference that just one man 'designed' Concorde and the Space Shuttle!

Actually, anyone who has ever seen Steve Freeman's design will notice a striking likeness to K8.

I think perhaps that the slight negativity surrounding BP originates in the fact that it didn't work. I've not heard anything bad about SoA or K7, except that it crashed, and now that Nigel seems to be working on something and spilling the odd few beans here and there hopefully QS will get exciting. The next jet-powered boat on Coniston ought to be our tribute act and that'll be very interesting indeed and we ought to be out shaking down Donald's boat in 2011 - all being well - so there's plenty to be positive about.

Mike, I don't think I said that Raj 'designed Concorde or the shuttle' If I gave that impression I apologise. I think I said he was a senior aerodynamicist involved in the design of same.. and I got that from the 'blurb' as given out from the publicists for the BP team at the time.
I never question Raj about his background, I just accepted that he was a darn site cleverer than me! as did Ron Wolbold in a press conference.
I was with Raj and Ron in a Pub in the Midlands where Ron had his workshop and we were discussing things.. as Ron stated he lost the pair of us very quickly in what he was saying and his table mat calculations[I wish I had kept them!]
Bill says he is going to the conference in March.. see if Bill stays in longer than we did!

The designer of K8 just happened to design such little known projects as - Concord, the space shuttle and a few canard jet planes that broke a few ASR's, so what would he know?

You not only said it, but then quoted yourself again later on too, so actually you said it twice! But thanks for the clarification.
